1. Hold onto boxes

We like to hold onto boxes in our family. We have a whole storage room that is full of boxes for furniture, appliances, and toys. I especially like to hold onto boxes that plates and cups come in because they usually have special dividers to keep them safe.

Even if you didn’t hold onto the original boxes, try to start saving your boxes once you know you will be moving. It is surprising how quickly they accumulate. For example, we have quite a few delivery boxes and diaper boxes (even with primarily using reusable diapers).

Make sure you fill up non-box items with materials as well. I always pack my suitcases and hampers with clothes to make the most of that space.

Using old boxes or reusable moving boxes can help you to have a more sustainable move.

2. Use reusable moving boxes

For the remainder of boxes you need, consider investing in reusable moving boxes. You will have a more sustainable move with reusable boxes because they are durable and can be used multiple times. Plus, these boxes are often easier to stack and transport, making your moving process smoother and more efficient. One way to do this is to buy stackable crates. We use these crates for moving, but they are also handy for holding craft supplies when we aren’t moving.

If you don’t plan to move again or you don’t have a use for the boxes after you move, you can try to sell them on Facebook or Ebay to others. You may also want to consider using traditional boxes in that circumstance so that you can recycle the cardboard rather than purchasing boxes that you will likely just throw away.

Speaking of recycling….

3. Look into the local energy and recycling at your new home

If you are moving to a new city, you may need to find a new energy provider. See if there is one available that offers energy from renewable energy sources. You may need to pay a little extra (for example, we pay $15 a month), but if it is within your budget then having this set up from the beginning of your move will allow you to make a difference from the first day you set foot in your new abode.

You should also look into the recycling policy for where you will be moving since different cities and states have different recycling programs. This can help you to avoid “wish-cycling” where people try to recycle materials that don’t work in their local recycling centers. This can contaminate materials that otherwise could be recycled, resulting in more products going to the landfill. It can also cause delays in the recycling process such as when plastic grocery bags get caught in the machinery.

4. Dispose of hazardous materials properly

Similarly, it’s important to dispose of hazardous materials properly to prevent harm to both the environment and human health when you are moving. You should not throw items such as batteries, paint, pesticides, and electronics away with regular trash. They can leak harmful chemicals into the soil and water supply. Research local hazardous waste disposal facilities in your area or participate in community recycling events to ensure these materials are handled responsibly.

5. Choose biodegradable packing materials

When it comes to packing for your move, consider choosing biodegradable packing materials to minimize your environmental impact. Opt for materials such as packing paper made from recycled materials. Keep in mind that items that are marked as “biodegradable” may actually only degrade under commercial composting conditions rather than in the environment.

6. Donate or recycle items you no longer need

In my opinion, one of the biggest benefits of moving is having the opportunity to assess what we need to hold onto and what we can get rid of. I have been guilty of finding boxes that I hadn’t opened from my last move, which is definitely a sign that those are items to let go of. Moving is helpful for forcing decluttering in situations like that.

If you find that you no longer need certain items after your move, consider donating or recycling them to further extend their lifespan and minimize waste. Donating gently used items to local organizations not only helps those in need but also reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. For clothes in good condition, you could consider sending them to ThredUp – you might even make some money by doing this! Plus, haven’t you heard? Buying used clothing is the new fashion trend. For clothes that are very worn or are unable to be sold or donated, consider using them as cleaning rags.

7. Remember to change your address

Don’t forget to change your address when you move to avoid wasted paper when letters are sent to the wrong address. If you live in the United States, you can easily change your address via the U.S. Postal Service website.

8. Seek out eco-friendly moving companies

When looking to make your move as sustainable as possible, consider seeking out eco-friendly moving companies. These companies prioritize reducing their carbon footprint by utilizing fuel-efficient vehicles, implementing green packing materials, and incorporating eco-friendly practices into their operations. By choosing an environmentally conscious moving company, you can ensure that your move aligns with your commitment to sustainability.

9. Utilize green cleaning products

To continue your eco-friendly journey, consider utilizing green cleaning products while preparing for your move. Many traditional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that can be damaging to both your health and the environment. By opting for natural and non-toxic alternatives, you can effectively clean your home without contributing to pollution or harmful waste. Look for products that are biodegradable, cruelty-free, and free of synthetic fragrances and dyes. Making the switch to green cleaning products is a simple yet impactful way to minimize your carbon footprint during the moving process.

10. Offset your carbon footprint

Offset your carbon footprint by exploring green transportation options and supporting carbon offset programs that help mitigate the environmental impact of your move. By choosing eco-friendly modes of transportation such as public transit, biking, or carpooling, you can significantly reduce the emissions associated with your move. Additionally, consider purchasing carbon offsets to neutralize the greenhouse gas emissions produced during the transportation of your belongings. These offsets support projects that reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, such as reforestation initiatives or renewable energy developments. By taking these steps, you can minimize the environmental impact of your move and contribute to a more sustainable future for our planet.

Incorporating these 10 eco-friendly hacks into your next move can make a significant impact on reducing waste and shrinking your carbon footprint. By choosing biodegradable packing materials, donating items you no longer need, and offsetting your carbon footprint, you can create a more sustainable move.
