Melissa's Turtles & Tortoises

Melissa's Sulcata Tortoise.
"Tater" is Melissa's very first exotic tortoise.
Tater is a baby Sulcata Tortoise (Geochelone sulcata) and has quickly become the favorite tortoise for Melissa, her family and friends.
The Cute Yawn!

Melissa's Russian Tortoise.
"Lemon-head" is Melissa's mischievous Russian Tortoise.
Lemon-head is quite a character like most Russian tortoises (Testudo horsfieldii) getting into everything. Lemon-head is always sniffing and eating whatever she finds on the floor which sometimes includes poop! Melissa tries to stop Lemon-head from eating what she shouldn't but Lemon-head can be sneaky!

The mystery of Melissa'a tortoise flipping. Solved!
The mystery of Melissa's tortoise flipping. Solved!
Melissa theorizes that Tater's mysterious flipping must be from a little hidden spring that pops out when Melissa's not around. Click the picture to play Melissa's short animation.
Melissa hopes this animation will help other baby sulcata tortoise owners to understand why baby sulcata's are often found flipped over on their back.

Hungry tortoise eyeing food.
"Hungry Tortoise Eyeing Food" is Melissa's drawing inspired by Lemon-head's never ending hunger!

An Illustrated Turtle Rhyme:
There once was a girl who lived in a shoe. There once was a girl who lived in a shoe.
She had so many turtles she didn't know what to do. She had so many turtles she didn't know what to do.
She fed them all lettuce with calcium on top. She fed them all lettuce with calcium on top.
It was enough to make them go flippity-flop. It was enough to make them go flippity-flop.
She put them to bed all soundly sleepy. She put them to bed all soundly sleepy.
With their heads laying down all soundly dreaming. With  their heads laying down all soundly dreaming.
Of lettuce that there eating! Of lettuce that there eating!
